A typical hotplate magnetic stirrer has a heating element in its base and a corresponding monitoring system. A temperature sensor (thermocouple) is fitted to the working surface. The instrument does not heat the medium, and temperature can be adjusted to experimental requirements.
Do not use a hotplate magnetic stirrer to stir explosive substances in hazardous environments or operate it underwater. Only trained personnel should use it. Keep the power cable away from the hotplate and wear protective equipment appropriate to the medium. Do not process media presenting an explosion hazard indoors. Place the instrument on a noncombustible or fire-resistant surface.
Consider the magnetic field's effects on nearby objects such as data-storage devices and pacemakers. Beware of heat: the plate can reach several hundred degrees Celsius. Avoid burns when touching the housing or plate, and remember that residual heat remains after shutdown. Expansion during heating and cooling may cause slight noises.
