What Is a Magnetic Stirrer?
Magnetic stirrers are suitable for heating or simultaneous heating and stirring for low-viscosity liquids or solid-liquid mixtures. They use magnetic fields and vortex flow. Place the liquid and a stir bar in a vessel; the base generates a magnetic field that rotates the bar to mix the liquid. Operating principle: magnetic repulsion between like poles and continuously changing polarity at the base drive the magnetic stir bar.
Main functions: Magnetic stirrers generally provide stirring and heating. First, they mix reactants and distribute temperature evenly. Second, stirring helps prevent bumping during heating in a closed vessel; for example, during distillation, either boiling stones or a magnetic stirrer may be used. Third, stirring accelerates reactions or evaporation to reduce processing time. Applications: Corning digital hotplates use a closed-loop control knob to monitor and adjust stirring speed. A microprocessor automatically adjusts motor power for aqueous solutions, viscous liquids and semisolid mixtures.
The key element is a drive mechanism based on the fundamental properties of magnets.

What Are Magnetic Stirrers Used For?
Magnetic stirrers provide stirring alone or simultaneous heating and stirring for low-viscosity liquids or solid-liquid mixtures. They use magnetic fields and vortex flow: place the liquid and a stir bar in a vessel, and the magnetic field generated by the base rotates the bar to mix the liquid.
How Magnetic Stirrers Work
Magnetic repulsion between like poles and continuously changing polarity at the base drive the magnetic stir bar. The rotating bar moves the sample to produce uniform mixing.
How Does Magnetic Stirrer Temperature Control Work?
Two temperature-control methods are commonly used. One uses an electrical-contact mercury thermometer.
Magnetic Stirrer Applications and Features
Hotplate magnetic stirrers use high-quality DC motors for low noise and smooth speed adjustment. The enclosed hotplate provides auxiliary heating.
